Kellen Linden-Hansen, Issue 13, Montrose
The past few weeks the McCook Central/ Montrose Boys' Basketball team ended the regular season with five out of the final seven games on our home court. The team went 1-6 for the final seven games of the year. They started off slow dropping games to Garretson and Croften, Ne. But the boys picked it up and beat the Howard tigers with a score of 58-51. The boys however went down hill from there dropping the rest of the games finishing the regular season 3-17. The team will play Bon Homme at Tyndal for the first round of regions. The teams meet earlier in the year at the Parkston Classic with Bon Homme coming out on top with a score of 65-52.

Semester Change
This year there was a drastic change in the way our school’s semesters were arranged. Semester did not end until January 13th. This resulted in semester tests being taken after Christmas break. Students and teachers were very rattled by the change. If you want to express your opinion about the change email hs3034@k12.sd.us. A new article will be wrote for the next edition of Red Ferret including opinions and more details about the change.

The Homework Dilemma
What
comes to mind when I say Homework? Stupid? Boring? Pointless? Or is it educational?
Helpful? Instructional? If you think it is so bad for you, why in the end are
you always having to do it? If you keep having to do it, there must be a point
to it, right?
Of
course, there are two points to this argument. We cannot determine how many
issues “The Homework Perception” could possibly take. It does not matter how long it will take,
we will spend as much time on it that it needs. The whole purpose of this
project is to open up communication between teachers and students about
homework. Look for future issues with “#homework”. We
look forward to talking with you about this topic in the future!
American Military Machines
American Military Machines.
Since World War 1, America’s military, along with other countries’, have been
working on tanks and machines to help them in wars and other conflicts.
The first tank to be made for the US efforts was created by Ford
in 1918. America was in a shortage of armored vehicles, small arms, and
aircraft at the time, and the Ford 3-Ton M1918 model was just a small attempt
to come back from the shortage. (below left)
The 240mm caterpillar self-propelled Mark IV Howitzer was a great
victory for the US, because of the self-propelled aspect of the machine. The
much larger versions required another mean of transportation. This vehicle was
a one pilot run machine that could shoot down aircrafts and was essential to
the Military’s efforts. (below right)
In 1935, a new tank came to light in the US, called the Light Tank
T2E1. This tank was compiled of trial and error attempts on the T1 and T2
prototypes. By modern standards, this was a pretty compact and light weight
tank. This was a very sound design and a good call by the American Military. (Below Left)

Endangered Species
Endangered Species
As most of you probably already know, endangered species
have been coming more and more of a problem over the years. Most of these
increases are caused by poachers or the human race over populating areas where
those animals usually live. These animals are placed into three categories,
Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable. Some animals can be categorized as extinct in
the wild, but are still living in some zoos or conservation areas with the help
of caregivers.
The most critically endangered species is a bird, called the
Ivory-Billed woodpecker. This bird is so endangered it could almost be
classified extinct. This bird is the largest woodpecker in the world, and is
native to the Southeastern United States. This bird has once already been declared
completely extinct, but had reappeared shortly after being “extinct”. Its
depleting population was caused by logging in areas that it lived, and now no
more than two live in the wild or in a zoo. (right)
The Amur Leopard, also known as the “rarest cat in
existence” is among another of the critically endangered species in the world.
These big cats live in southeastern Russia and the Jilin Provence of China.
Extensive habitat loss and poachers have caused this creature to land on the
critically endangered list. Now, 60 or less remain in the wild in any given
country it’s native to. Its gorgeous fur makes it a target for poachers, and
the growing human population forces it out of its natural habitat that’s
replaced with homes for people. (Below Right)
The Javan Rhinoceros is among another species of critically
endangered animals. Many rhino species are either endangered or critically
endangered because of their valuable horn. No more than 60 of these are left.
They are native to Asia, and are a swamp dwelling rhinoceros species. Poaching
is a major player in this animal’s downfall. They are often killed for just the
horn to make little trinkets for tourists, and the rest of the animal is left,
with no other part of the animal being used. (Below Left)
How YOU can help
LEARN about endangered species in your area, and make your
living space wild life friendly. Many websites and organizations have a place
to donate money towards saving the endangered species, or keeping them in a
national park or reserve where they are safe from harm and can thrive. PROTECT
HABITAT. Keep the outdoors a clean place, pick up litter and refrain from
throwing garbage on the ground. Recycling also helps a great deal.
