End of the Year

End of the Year

BY: Kellen Linden- Hansen

The first thing first is that the end of the year is coming fast A.K.A FRIDAY!!!! Don’t go thinking this is time for you to be dinking around especially as most students have either taken or are taking semester tests. This summer there will be somethings that are done differently. For instance there will be no Spud fest this summer means the community has decided to have a mini Spud fest during homecoming week. The pool will be opening shortly after school is let out. Make sure that you are safe and that you get all of your school things handed in.

13 Reasons Why is a fictional story. It a series of episodes and books that themes bullying, sexual assault, and teen suicide. The series of episodes was released on Netflix on March 31, 2017.

The series has made a lot of people think of the things they do in everyday life. It has had a positive affect but it has also caused many people to commit suicide after watching the series. The tittle is 13 Reasons Why because before Hannah Baker committed suicide she left tapes with 13 reasons why she did it. Everyone who had a tape in the series received the tapes and had to listen to them.

Racing

Racing by Kellen

Racing is a spring, summer, and fall sport that surprisingly is spreading around the nation. The biggest being obviously NASCAR. The second doesn’t take place on a hard concrete surface. The surface is dirt. The race cars that race on it can be from 4- wheelers all the way to 410 outlaw sprint cars. This is a growing sport just like the gaming community. The racing scene is growing more and more and is becoming as popular as football and baseball. My personal favorate is 410 sprint cars just becasue of the fact that you can go to basically anywhere to see them race and they are one of the most action packed racing I have personally ever witnessed.

Fidget spinners are little toys you can hold between your fingers and spin. They are supposed to help kids concentrate better that have ADHD. Although these toys are very popular and almost everyone is buying them. Millions of fidget spinners have been sold.

Some schools have banned them because they are a distraction to other students and to the student themselves. I personally think that they are useless for the fact of concentration in school. They are probably more of a distraction then anything. Some reviews say that it is fun to play with and others said that it didn’t help the ADHD it just made more of a distraction.

National FFA Organization is an intracurricular organization. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. It is for people who are interested in agriculture and leadership. National FFA Organization is to help students grow in leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education. It makes a positive difference in the lives of students.
FFA is funded through sponsorships and individual donations. Every year each member pays their national dues which is seven dollars.
I think that FFA is important to all students because it opens up many opportunities. It offers a different type of learning. FFA helps student grow in leadership and interest in agriculture. I think that it will be something kids in our school will enjoy very much because of all the agriculture background in our area. It will help our school be more involved in the agriculture community.

Homework Dilemma Teacher Response Questions

We are back again with the homework dilemma! A little while ago we got in contact with the teachers of the school. The questions we asked and a few of the responses are listed below:
What were you like as a student?
  • Good student, always did my work, and liked school.
  • I was a fairly average student who earned mostly A’s and B’s. I had to work hard to receive good grades in school, which my parents expected from me. I was involved in any and all activities and athletic events possible. I always tried to be respectful and work hard at everything I did.
  • I like to get started on my work right away. I did not like homework.
  • Average.
  • I completed my homework on time and prepared accordingly for projects and tests.

How would you explain the purpose of homework?
  • Practicing new skills and reviewing previous work necessary for long-term learning.
  • Homework is a great tool to teach students responsibility and key skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary education and beyond.
  • Reinforcement of the lesson; a change to prove to the instructor that you understood the content of the lesson.
  • It should be called finish work…to complete work that you didn’t complete during the day. Kids have enough stress on them that they shouldn’t be given more work to do at home.
  • Give the opportunity to practice what was being covered in class to help the instructor know it the students understand the material. Having to complete work outside of class forces the student to show what they can do on their own without assistance.

What do you expect from your students?
  • Homework completed at the beginning of class on the date due (usually the next day)
  • I expect students to give their best effort at whatever they do, respect themselves, and respect others.
  • I expect mutual respect. I expect on topic questions and comments. I expect them to lean and be successful.
  • I expect my students to compete an assignment that they didn’t complete throughout the day. If a student uses their time well and still has work to complete, I feel teachers should look at what needs to be completed and make proper adjustments to the assignment. It is not about quantity of work it is about quality.
  • To work hard and try their very best on anything done for the class.

How would you challenge slow learners and advanced learners within the same class?
  • Tough to do, sometimes will pair up a slower student with a more advanced student.
  • Projects and hands on learning allows students to work at their own pace and push themselves as far as they want. This allows students that learn slower to work at a slower pace and advanced learners to push their learning to higher levels.
  • I would, first, be aware of the extended learning activities and the special needs of the students and then make assignment individualized to meet the needs of each student. The goal is for every student to understand the lesson and be successful.
  • Expectation vary as well as assignments for each student.
  • It would be great if I could assign different things to different students based on their individual needs. However, try explaining to a struggling student why they have to do more problems than their friend….

How do you keep your students on task?
  • Expectation is that students will manage their time wisely. Poor choices have consequences (lose privileges, make up time later, etc.)
  • Any way possible. It depends on the class and the individual student as far as what motivates them to stay on task.
  • Make it interesting and fun. Relate it to real world problems and situations.
  • Incentives and rewards for completing tasks...weekly rewards!
  • Encouragement.

Please tell us about your experiences working with students at this age level.
  • Some students really care and work hard. These are the ones that excel. Others just do the minimum to get by. They don't usually do as well.
  • It is much more difficult to get High School students excited and engaged in learning. It is very fulfilling to see High School students reach or strive to reach their full potential as a student and move on to successful careers, post-secondary education after high school.
  • I have year’s experience, at least 10 working with k-12

Describe three of your weaknesses and three strengths as a teacher.
  • w1: need to be more patient w2: sometimes allow students to waste class time instead of maximizing learning time w3: doing too much for students (instead of letting them do the work) s1: good classroom management/discipline plan s2: good knowledge of content area s3: I really care about student learning for the long term, not just tomorrow
  • Weaknesses: 1. fairly new to teaching 2. Still learning how to be the most effective teacher possible and enhance student learning to the best of my ability. Strengths: 1. Experience in a wide variety of careers & education 2. Willingness to learn and become better
  • I am organized. I am detailed oriented. I love to talk and have conversations within a lecture. I find that this gets me off task often. I have trouble seeing the big picture because I am focused on the tiny details, and sometimes I get flustered if I don't know my environment.
  • Strengths: desire to see students succeed, always looking for new ways to present content, available to students when they need help weaknesses: can struggle to explain concepts in multiple ways (beyond 2  ways), can be slow on feedback of work (correcting), can seem demanding when I'm trying to push students to do better

How do you make learning fun with your students? Or how do you get students interested/motivated in learning?
  • Looking at the big picture: they will be expected to know this when they get to the next level. I make it fun/interesting whenever possible by using activities and hands-on work. But sometimes you just have to gut your way through it. Just like life.
  • I try to incorporate a lot of hands on learning and projects.
  • Having conversations with them, treating them with respect while allowing them to questions why we are doing what we are doing. I like to relate the learning to things that they already know, real world examples.
  • Be Creative, Reward students that use their time and work hard while in class.
  • I try to show my own excitement for the subject matter as well as link it to things in their own life.

How much homework do you typically give?
  • 30-45 minutes per day
  • Very little
  • I like to give homework to be sure that the students know the content. It can be in class work or take home work. I try not to do it every night but most nights. At least a question or two to reinforce what we are discussing.
  • I only have my students take home work if they wasted their time during the day.
  • A large number of the homework assignments in my class are started in class so what they take home as homework depends on how well they use class time.

Summer Camping Recipes

Summer Camping Recipes
By: Hope Scotting
Summer is a time for camping and spending time outdoors. When being outside making breakfast, dinner, and supper can be a task, finding recipes that make meal prep a little easier can make your time spent outside more enjoyable. By wrapping dishes in foil and placing them over a fire, placing items in the waffle maker, or using preparing meals before leaving home you can have a fun, food filled summer. Below are a few recipes and recommendations.

Breakfast:

Cinnamon roll waffle
Buy a can of pre-packaged cinnamon rolls, simply place the rolls in a greased waffle iron until the cinnamon rolls begin to crisp. Remove the rolls and drizzle icing over top and allow to slightly cool before eating.

Omelet in a bag
Simply place an egg or two and your desired seasoning and topping in a Ziploc bag. Scramble the eggs by simply shaking the bag. Place the bag in a pot of water that has begun to boil over the fire. Allow the egg to cook in the water for 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the egg and serve.
Cereal
Cereal is always a simple, convenient breakfast option for lazy morning.

Dinner and supper:

Walking Tacos
Prepare and cook hamburger. Season with taco seasoning and place in a Ziploc bag. Freeze in advance before placing in a cooler. The meat will begin to unfreeze while in the cooler. When ready to serve simply place the meat over a flame in a Dutch oven and heat. Serve with small bags of chips, sour cream, taco sauce, tomatoes, and other taco toppings.
Camping Quesadillas:
By simply wrapping a tortilla in foil it can be cooked while camping.

Crockpot meals:
Meals can also be prepared in advance and placed in a crockpot. Simply store the pot in the cooler until the morning you are ready to serve. Plug in the crockpot and allow to cook for the designated time.

Hotdogs and Hamburgers
Hotdogs and hamburgers are always a simple option. Place over the fire and cook until complete.
Snacks:
Always prepare camping snacks before going out. Allow them to be available in the cooler or someplace else to be able to be accessible when necessary.
Oatmeal snack bites
Fruit
Slicing fruit or having oranges, apples, or bananas is am easy snack.

Peanut Butter, Banana Roll-ups

Summer

School is almost out already, its crazy right and that means summer will be peaking right around the corner. Did I say summer. Yes! Summer? What comes to your mind when I say that. Maybe it is swimming, camping or even going on family vacations. Well when it comes down to me, I think of nature and the searing heat coming down onto you from the sun. I also think of racing considering every weekend of the summer I race-- and not to mention that every weekend I am burning up because I’m in my racing suit. Lastly I think about working at the pool and the fresh breeze that blows on me while in the water, sitting on the guard stand and just in general outside because I always get a tan, which is always a plus!

Summer is one of my favorite seasons of the year because you can relax and do anything you want. I like it the most to because you can hang out with friends more and have more free time which is always good. So what is the real definition of as we so call “summer?”

As the Webster states the definition of summer is the season between spring and autumn comprising in the northern hemisphere usually the months of June, July, and August or as reckoned astronomically extending from the June solstice to the September equinox. Therefore, what do you plan to do for the summer of 2017. As long as you have the best time of your life this summer then everything will be good. Have a good rest of the school year as it comes to an end and have a very enjoyable summer!

Will the FDA approve Ecstasy

The History of Ecstasy:
Ecstasy, XTC, or MDMA was first used in Germany in 1912. It was originally going to be used for a supplement to help people with extreme appetite. In the 1970’s, the drug was used for psychotherapy by a small group of therapists in the United States. Ecstasy did not become popular among Americans until the 1980s and 90s. It is commonly found at raves or rock concerts. Since the 1990’s, distribution of the drug has been spread steadily across America.

How it’s used:
Ecstasy can be taken in a pill form, and is typically ingested through the mouth. However, it’s also a powder that can be snorted or smoked, but is hardly ever injected. Ecstasy can last anywhere from four to six hours, and typically produces feelings such as empathy for others, anxiety loss, very relaxed states, and positive “vibes”. This drug is so popular because people can party for days because of the drugs ability to rid people of the need to eat, sleep, or drink anything. This effect can cause severe dehydration and exhaustion. Fortunately, ecstasy is not as addictive as cocaine or heroin so is much less dangerous. The effects of ecstasy can start after just 20 minutes after consumption.

Short-Term Effects:
·         Blurred vision
·         Muscle Cramping
·         Chills and Sweating
·         Hallucinations
·         Tremors

Long-Term Effects:
·         Damage to the neurons in the brain
·         Permanent brain damage

Where it comes from:
Ecstasy has been created in many labs around the world, and more recently Israeli and Russian organizations have come together to manufacture the drug in many different forms to spread in the European countries. This is also a primary source for American distributors (dealers). Organizations from other countries have primary smuggled their products through the mail, but also commercial airlines and air freight shipments.

FDA’s role in the future of Ecstasy

In Recent months, the FDA has approved a final trial of Molly on humans. The point of these trials is to hopefully find relief for people who suffer from PTSD. One study indicates that after three doses of MDMA, 56 percent of people suffering from PTSD reported a decrease in the severity of their symptoms, and follow-up exams indicated that the effects lasted for up to a year. Doctors fear people will abuse this drug, because thus far into the drugs history it’s just been used for partying and “feel good” experiences. The predictions of Ecstasy being approved by 2021 rely on these trials continuing to show improvement.

Pretty Little Liars: Season 7

Have you currently been watching Netflix, to know what shows recently came
out? Well, I can tell you I have. When I saw that there is a season 7 of Pretty Little
Liars I was so happy. So here I am to tell you about Pretty Little Liars Season 7 that
recently was released.
The seventh and final season of Pretty Little Liars will have 20 episodes and
10 episodes which were aired in 2016 and the rest of the 10 episodes aired in April
2017. On August 29, 2016 it was confirmed that this would be the final and last
season ever for this series of episodes.
In conclusion or a very brief summary of this show is in a small town called Rosewood,
Pennsylvania the series follow the lives of four girls: Aria Montgomery, Spencer
Hastings, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields whose lives fall apart after the alleged
murder of their friend and leader of the group which is Alison DiLaurenti. As the first
episode starts Hanna is trapped in a cell by A.D… They have no idea who it is but
soon you might could it be Noel, Jason or someone else. I'll leave that up to you to figure it out.

Four Zodiacs - Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra

The end of the year is getting closer and that means not many more issues for the “Red Ferret.” This being so, and having 8 of the 13 Zodiac left, I am going to be putting 4 of them in each remaining issue. In this issue, we will be reviewing Cancer, Leo, Virgo, and Libra. I hope you enjoy.

Cancer
Cancer is known as “The Crab.” Cancer’s date range is from July 20th to August 10th. The element of Cancer is water, which makes sense since you can find crabs near or in water. You have a cardinal quality. Ironically, instead of red (like the stereotypical hermit crab), your color is white. Your days of the week include Monday and Thursday. Unlike the other signs, you don’t have a ruling planet; your ruler is Earth’s moon. You have the greatest overall compatibility with Capricorn and Taurus, whom were both covered already. The lucky numbers of this sign include 2, 3, 15, and 20. Strengths of a Cancer include being tenacious, highly imaginative, loyal, emotional, sympathetic, and persuasive. Though, on the contrary, you are moody, pessimistic, suspicious, manipulative, and insecure. That’s all for Cancer. Make sure to keep reading.

Leo
We are now onto Leo, “The Lion.” The dates for this Zodiac range from August 10th to September 16th. Leos are represented by the element of fire, which coincides with their heartwarming personality and leadership. The quality they possess is fixed, and colors include gold, yellow, and orange, which all represent fire and the lion’s body and mane. The ruler of this sign is also not a planet, it being the Sun. The greatest overall compatibility is with the signs of Aquarius and Gemini. Lucky numbers include 1, 3, 10, and 19. Leo’s strengths include being creative, passionate, generous, warm-hearted, cheerful, and humorous. Weaknesses include being arrogant, stubborn, self-centered, lazy, and inflexible. Now we move on.

Virgo
Up next is “The Maiden,” Virgo. The dates of Virgo are from September 16th to October 30th. Their element is Earth, which explains why they are “down-to-earth” and one of the most careful signs. As this Zodiac, you have a mutable quality. Colors include grey, beige, and pale-yellow. Your day of the week is Wednesday. The ruling planet is Mercury, the closest to the sun, as well as the smallest. You have the greatest overall compatibility with any Pisces of Cancer. Lucky numbers range from 5, 14, and 15, to 23 and 32. Virgo has strengths of being loyal, analytical, kind, hardworking, and practical. The weaknesses include shyness, worry, being overly critical of themselves and others, and being all work and no play. We are no onto our last sign of this issue.

Libra

Our final sign for this issue is Libra, “The Scales.” To be a Libra, you must be born between October 30th and November 23rd. The element for Libra is Air, and you have a cardinal quality. Your colors include pink and green. The day of the week for Libras is Friday. Your ruling planet is Venus. Aries and Sagittarius are the signs that any Libra is most compatible with. The Lucky Numbers are 4, 6, 13, 15, and 24. Strengths of “The Scales” include being cooperative, diplomatic, gracious, fair-minded, and social. Still, there are weaknesses: being indecisive, avoiding confrontations, carrying a grudge, and self-pity. That’s all for this issue. Stay tuned to the next issue to learn about the last four signs! Remember, the information four these four signs is available on www.astrology-zodiac-signs.com. Thanks for reading!

"Fish" the Duck

Fish
By: Hope Scotting
The anatomy class this year were given the chance to raise duck eggs. Kelly Deters gave the class two eggs on March 25th of this year. The gestation period for a duck egg is around twenty eight days. Before the egg was hatched it was kept in an incubator; the temperature was set to 38˚ C, 99˚ F.  There was also a pan of water placed in the incubator. The water created the correct level of humidity for the egg. During the gestation period, the egg was rotated about every four days. The main goal when taking care of an egg in an incubator is to simulate the conditions the mother would place the egg in.
After the twenty eight day gestation the age hatched on April, 21st. The duck was named Fish by Abbie, Dani, and Leah. Fish immediately became attached to humans; Fish was very impressionable as a baby and has grown to love human attention. During the day Fish stays at the school; during the night and during non-school time Fish stays between Mr. Haynes, Kelly Deter, Emily, Abbie, Dani, Leah, and Eric. It has not been determined if Fish is a boy or girl yet. Fish has already began to form a crop; a crop is a formation of duck feed around the neck that is held to be ate later. This summer Fish will stay will Leah; after Fish is the proper size Fish will go to live on Kendra’s farm.

Animal Facts

Interesting Animal Facts

These animals were chosen because they had some very interesting facts about them. They were more interesting facts than some of the other animals I looked up.

Dolphins
Dolphins use the same names as cows when it comes to males, females, and babies. (Bulls, Cows, and Calves.)
Dolphins are actually carnivores, or meat eaters.
The Orca Whale (also known as the killer whale) is actually a type of dolphin.

Frogs
Frogs MUST live near water, if they are in a dry place too long, their skin will dry until they can’t move without tearing and they will die.
Frogs breathe through their nostrils while also absorbing about half the air they need through their skin.
Frogs can see forwards, sideways and upwards all at the same time. They never close their eyes, even when they sleep. Frogs actually use their eyes to help them swallow food. When the frog blinks, its eyeballs are pushed downwards creating a bulge in the roof of its mouth. This bulge squeezes the food inside the frog's mouth down the back of its throat.

Cheetahs
The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. They can reach a top speed of around 113 km per hour. A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 113 km in just a few seconds. They are extremely fast, however they tire quickly and can only keep up their top speed for a few minutes before they are too tired to continue.
The long black lines on a cheetah’s face that run from the eyes to the mouth actually help protect its eyes from the sun and help see a long distance.
Cheetahs cannot climb trees, although they do climb small trunks or short trees just by a leap.
Cheetahs have very bad night vision, but can see very well in the day.

 Sharks
Sharks have no bones, only cartilage.
Sharks must be continuously moving because the water moving over its gills pushes in oxygen. If that isn’t happening they will die.
As soon as a pup is born (baby shark) they are able to fend for themselves. They baby also tries to get away quickly, before its mother can eat it.
Some species of sharks do lay eggs, but the majority have live births.
